The
Weapon of Young Gods is my first stab at
a novel, after some desperate attempts to get into
grad school in 2002, and subsequent rejection-fits
of verbal vengeance in 2003. The story went through
a few permutations in 2006 and 2007 before I started
posting its true first draft in January 2008. It's
basically an effort to write what I know, without
sounding too much like I'm ripping off people like
Hunter Thompson, Bret Easton Ellis, Irvine Welsh,
etc etc.
The final catalyst, though, was Rian Johnson's
Cali-noir film "Brick," and WOYG
has thus sort of become a pretentiously muddled,
sun-fried spew of juvenalia, where I go through
the motions of a whodunit via the handy (and familiar!)
device of teenage, and twenty-something, narcissism.
There may be nothing more than a first draft- we'll
see- but the real fun has been spontaneously creating
a companion
soundtrack CD of echo-bass-guitar ambient weirdness. |

If The
Weapon of Young Gods is ever finished,
it'll be yet another book that's blogged before
self-release by some DIY vanity publisher (for obvious reasons, right? There's even photographic
(and sometimes musical) accompaniment. Who knows
why I chose to do it this way- but my three loyal
readers apparently appreciate it.
Anyway, it's looking like 2010 will be the year of Many Big Things, and a WOYG self-publishing would be a nice way to top it all off.
