Saturday September 1, 2007
Kurns-DuBois wedding, Capitola.

Bryn and I were good elder brothers this weekend and took off (with Karla and Em) for Santa Cruz and our sister Lis' wedding. She married the handsome and talented Nick Kurns, the bad-assingest mandolin player in Santa Clara County. We were invited not only as best big brothers ever, but also to help with the soundtrack, and so we got to play some acoustified, instrumentalized Honey White songs and cover tunes as the happy couple walked to and from the ceremony. Lots of people took tons of pictures of the whole shebang, some of which you can see here.

Saturday November 18 and Sunday November 19, 2006
Brig Pilgrim at the Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr, Dana Point. 7pm. Admission: Free!
Set both nights: This Lullaby - Blood of the Goat - Wayfaring Stranger - Leaving of Liverpool - Dead Man - Island Fever

This weekend Bryn and I teamed up with our buddy Screamin' Steve Foster in an ad-hoc collaboration called the Scuppers, and made some music on the brig Pilgrim in Dana Point Harbor. We played a short semi-acoustic set of chanteys and covers, opening for the ArchiTexture Dance Company's "Sonnet for the Sea" production, also aboard ship. As for the set--yes, that is a Queens of the Stone Age song you see there at the beginning. Got some older than dirt covers, a Bodie tune, the Neil Young instrumental, and Bryn's favorite Honey White song to top it off. We were joined by Tracy Kirby for the first night. It was foggy and cold but we pulled off a good opener. Though Bryn says it was ok, I have no idea how the 2nd night went as I was out cold, unconscious after a ride on the new Space Mountain at Disneyland. Anyway, I know there were photos taken, so maybe we'll see some in the near future. Oh, almost forgot- Bryn's Scuppers bio from the program (yaar matey) goes like this:

"The Scuppers are Bryn DuBois, Keir DuBois, Stephen Foster and Tracy Kirby. Between them all they have played in rock bands and blues bands, recorded albums of traditional sea chanteys, and toured the nation in various drum & bugle corps. Three of them sail, three are co-workers, two currently have beards, and one is currently bald. Most of them drink, all of them curse, and they all have fun making music."

Friday August 4, 2006
Samueli Hall at the Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr, Dana Point. 4:30pm. Admission: Private.
Audio: Stream | Archive

Set: Blacking Out - Nightfall - The Lightning Rod - Island Fever - Mercy Rule - Let Go - Sweet Oblivion - Unprofessional - Keep Moving - Green Hills - Captain, Wake Up

We made our Orange County debut with a little stealth gig at a company barbecue for Bryn's work. Yes, yes, that means we played a hometown show (for Bryn and I) and we didn't even tell any of you. Sorry. Seriously, it was a private party and so that sorta made it a private show that we couldn't really get the huge hordes of Honey White fans into, but we recorded it for everyone who couldn't be there. It was an ideal gig to do for a bunch of reasons- unique setting (Samueli Hall is huge, right by the harbor/beach and filled with oceanographic stuff), a long playing time, a happy audience, etc etc. Low-stress all around. Throw in free food, a beautiful afternoon, and Bryn ending the show with a short sea chantey, and you've got the makings of a good Honey White-athon. Notable performances included "Lightning Rod" and "Sweet Oblivion", as well as the live debut of a new song, "Green Hills".

Thursday November 17, 2005
The Derby Club, 4500 Los Feliz Blvd, Los Angeles. 8pm, with Slow Car Crash, Evonne Rivera, and Versatile4. Admission: $12.

Set: Nightfall - Island Fever - Let Go - The Lightning Rod - Bottlerocket - Blacking Out - Mercy Rule - Unprofessional

Wow. Pulling off a big crowd on a Thursday night in a place we've never played before was a major big deal for us. We've now discovered our second not-so-secret weapon: we can pull on weekdays. Combine that with the ability to play a gig a month after our last rehearsal, and you've got a big bad indie-rock band one-two punch. Anyway, we were determined to be loud after spending 3 hours in traffic, and delivered a mostly-earsplitting set that nevertheless went down very well, despite a few technical problems for Brian at the beginning. It was great fun, but of course, the whole thing wouldn't have come off well at all if everyone we knew in Southern California hadn't shown up, so everything about this show- the multiple encores, packed house, even the extra money we made, is down to the presence of our friends and fans. It was great to see & talk to everyone present and we thank you all very much. Thanks also to the Derby sound crew and all at Underground Railroad Productions.

Set: Unprofessional - Nightfall - Island Fever - Mercy Rule - Let Go - You Let Me Fall - Sean Goes To Africa - Sweet Oblivion - Bottlerocket - The Lightning Rod - Blacking Out

The earliest HW start-time ever saw us open an all-day bill of music and dance over Fiesta weekend in honor of the funk zone's funkiest coffee & spirits lounge. We played a loose but energetic set despite the heat, and even pulled "You Let Me Fall" out of mothballs (it hadn't been played by the whole band since 4/30/03). I tell you, it's something to have Brian's "Sweet Oblivion" guitar as the soundtrack to a great view of the mountains on a glorious day like this one. Every time we have a gig like this I wonder why we don't play outside in daylight way more often.

Set: Nightfall - Let Go - Island Fever - Blacking Out - Bottlerocket - Sean Goes To Africa - Keep Moving - The Lightning Rod - Mercy Rule - Famous Last Words - Wayfaring Stranger

First off, enormous thanks to Earl, Jeff, Johanna, and William from the Expanding Polka Funk Experience for generously giving us their stage time. We got to stretch out, relax, and deliver a great set. Our Ventura debut was quite an auspicious one- Billy said that this might have been one of the best HW shows ever, simply because each player's personality, as well as that of the band as a whole, really shone through. We really had to work to shine through the smoke machine's spew, though- even if it was 4/20 and all. Plus we got to debut another song, Bryn's spanking-new tune "Nightfall". Apparently the whole thing was filmed by local access TV for broadcast on some later date- if we find out when, we'll let everyone know. The kicker for all this business is that I went to pick up our new CDs in L.A. today!

Set: Mercy Rule - Island Fever - Let Go - Unprofessional - Bottlerocket

Well, this one was quite an experience. Sure, being able to play in Cambell Hall was a blast- I’ve sat through many a lecture there, bored out of my skull, staring at the stage and jabbering to myself “hmmm… I could stand there, the drums would be there, Bryn could stand there...” Our part of this multicultural show was to represent the "white rock dude" culture, which was apparently low on the totem pole in terms of audience interest (except of course for our own die-hard fans). The sheer number of acts sharing the bill with us pretty much guaranteed a uniquely weird gig, which began to feel more and more like a game show- no, maybe even a high school talent show, than a conventional rock gig. Plus, about 95% of the 900-strong audience was a good chunk of UCSB's greek system- not exactly our crowd. We expected that to some degree, planning a quick high-energy set that would stand up to the numerous other acts, which included a Mexican folk band, a Polynesian dance troupe, and many more beautiful and talented people. Anyway, it went off okay, but not as good as last time; playing "Unprofessional" after not rehearsing it at all felt strikingly appropriate. Thanks to Patrick and the Campbell sound crew as well as Sigma Phi Omega. Special thanks to the longtime HW fans and the newcomers from Ventura...

I.V. Live in Embarcadero Hall, 935 Embarcadero Del Norte, Isla Vista. 9-11pm, with Matthew Cappiello. Admission: $4.
Audio: Stream | Archive

Set: Mercy Rule - Island Fever - Sweet Oblivion - Let Go - Blacking Out - Keep Moving - Famous Last Words - Bottlerocket - Sean Goes To Africa

We roared back into Isla Vista and previewed songs from the new album, including live debuts for Island Fever and Blacking Out. Mercy Rule, from 2002, was actually the oldest song in the set. Kinda nice to pull off a good tight gig after 3 months off and only one rehearsal earlier in the day. That's the special thing about this band and it's why we keep doing this despite our far-flung residences all over the state. Anyway, Embarcadero Hall is so totally different from what I remember as the Isla Vista Brewing Company (from the good old days) and others may recall as the burned-down Bank of America (from the badder, older days). UCSB converted it to a lecture hall but the I.V. Live crew transformed it into a theater-venue like they do every week. Our set was only 45 minutes but we crammed in as many of the big rumbling monster tunes as we could, so the show's arc kind of went rockers to slower tunes and back to rockers by the end. Thanks again to Jennifer, Michael, and the I.V. Live crew (no relation to the 2 Live Crew), as well as everyone who came in from the cold to let us rock their faces off.

KUCI-FM 88.9, Irvine. 6pm. (Bryn solo)
Set: The Lightning Rod - Let Go - Wayfaring Stranger - One Last Hallelujah

Our fabulous frontman went solo on KUCI-FM 88.9, UC Irvine's campus radio station, thanks to DJ Fred's Burning Show. Bryn did his thing with a 4-song set in the hopes that we'll all be able to get on the air and make some noise once the record's done.

Set: Mojo Pin - The Lightning Rod - Sweet Oblivion - Let Go - The Sandman - Keep Moving - One Last Hallelujah - How To Fight Lonliness - Mercy Rule - You Let Me Fall - Wayfaring Stranger - Karma Police - Pipeline - Miserlou/Wipeout

This was an outdoors, late afternoon gig in the funk zone with Bryn and Keir, before everyone's favorite polka funk band took the stage. We got to toss in a few covers we hadn't done before, like a Wilco song and yet another in Bryn's stash of Radiohead covers, in addition to the Buckley and Cash. Bryn also had to remember how to play some old Mojo Wire-era surf covers (now that he actually has a bona fide surf guitar, of course). Played an echo-less Lightning Rod once again, and a quiet Hallelujah went over well too. Earl & the gang came on soon after and polkad everyone's eyes out. Damn good BBQ at Red's, yo.

Wildcat Lounge, 15 W Ortega, Santa Barbara. 10pm, with Neverdown.
Audio: Stream | Archive
Set: The Lightning Rod - Mercy Rule - Sweet Oblivion - Sean Goes To Africa - Let Go - Keep Moving - Famous Last Words - Wayfaring Stranger

So there were several highlights of this one. Bryn debuted a solo version of "Lightning Rod" to start things off, and then the band came in with "Mercy Rule", and we went into the deep water music from there. Instead of Square One (who never showed) we shared the bill with Neverdown who went on after our slightly truncated set. Aside from a lurching version of "Let Go" things went pretty well, including the debut of another song, "Famous Last Words". We have lots of people to thank for the flood of documentation this show saw, so here goes: Thanks to Chris, Cindy, and Brian for filming, to Marika for taking some fantastic photos, Luke and Brian from the Sound Room for the recording, lighting and sound, and WIldcat manager Bob for coming in to have a look as well. Special super big thanks to our crowd of peeps who came out to see us on a Monday night. There's a CD or DVD in all this footage somewhere...

Set: Mercy Rule - Sweet Oblivion - Sean Goes To Africa - Unprofessional - Let Go - The Shivering Sand - Dead Man Theme - Bottlerocket - Fatal Flaws - Polarity - Keep Moving - Wayfaring Stranger - The Lightning Rod

Hang on- did I say "9:30-11pm"? Ah- well, turns out that translates as "whenever the Lakers/Kings game is over" until "closing". Brian said post-show that this was the weirdest gig we've ever played and I think I have to agree with him. Having the NBA as an opening act was only the beginning. "Mercy Rule" was a good, high-energy, LOUD thing to start the set with, and I think "Oblivion" went well too. We debuted 4 new songs tonight: "Sean Goes To Africa", "Bottlerocket", "Let Go", and "Keep Moving", and for the most part they went over great. Things were kind of claustrophobic and sometimes there were some nasty vibes, but surly basketball dudes were matched pound for pound by our legions of fans, and the place was quite packed. Thanks so much to everyone who came to see us. Conversely, a big middle finger goes to the drunk guy who kept yelling at us to play Zeppelin. Hey man, this note's for you.

with Andy Schramm
Set: Mojo Pin - Polarity - Heart On A Platter - Mercy Rule - Sweet Oblivion - The Sandman - I Fly Free - Pisces Lullabye - Whitecap - Fatal Flaws - Wayfaring Stranger - Lover You Should Have Come Over - Unprofessional - One Last Hallelujah

We had a nice late-afternoon, open-air public rehearsal for this one, loud enough for everyone at Dublin's and even Freebirds to hear us, not to mention the coming & going graduation-related traffic of cars, bikes, and people. Andy from THC even stopped in to play a few songs at the beginning. We showed off some of our tightest musical performances yet, but the whole thing is now overshadowed in not a few minds by the fact that the whole band was summarily beaten silly by our pal Tammy Streeter in an after-party foosball clash of the titans.

Set: Mojo Pin - I've Just Seen A Face - The Sandman - I Fly Free - Wayfaring Stranger - Mercy Rule - One Last Hallelujah - The Lightning Rod - You Let Me Fall - Street Spirit

Bryn and I squeezed in a quick and relatively quiet 10-song set this afternoon at a "Students Stopping Rape" rally in I.V. Since it wasn't technically a Honey White show (though Brian did make a celebrity appearance), we threw in some extra Bryn-only covers (Buckley, Beatles, Radiohead) at either end of the performance.

Set: Unprofessional - Heart On A Platter - Mercy Rule - Sweet Oblivion - Polarity - The Shivering Sand - So Cold - Pisces Lullabye - You Let Me Fall - Distorchestra - Fatal Flaws - Lover You Should Have Come Over - The Lightning Rod

First of all I have to say that the Invisible 3 rock big time. Andrew, Marco, and the guys were great and we'd love to team up again. Having another awesome band go on before us only gets us even more antsy to play a fantastic show, and that's exactly what we did, complete with Official Groupies, a new song's live debut (Sweet Oblivion), and an additional 600-watt bass amp that probably re-arranged my heartbeat and undoubtedly contriubuted to future hearing loss for all present. As always there will be mp3 up shortly. Thanks to Curt for helping us sound great and thanks to all who came to see our Wildcat debut.

Tonight saw us go live on TV, thanks to Adam and the Cafe crew. Big super extra special thanks to Jeff & Andy for sound/mixing help. We were guinea pigs for the show's new mixing board & equipment, but things went well and I did record it, so I'll post mp3 of the best bits as always and we'll also be able to compile a good mix for a DVD/video type thang. The crew really liked our songs, the band did well, and I made an ass out of myself by not knowing rock trivia (in this case, Jimi Hendrix's middle name- Marshall). The show will be rerun on Wed., 4/23 at 11:30am- the first of many reruns throughout the week.

Last night's set went ok, but we were all exhausted for one reason or another. I still am actually. The Distorchestra jam went off pretty well, with Bryn using his Death By Audio TSA pedal in Kid A fashion, hunched over it making his guitar amp spit humpback whale sounds as Brian's reverbed echo careened over the rhythm section. I'll put the mp3 up soon so you all can hear it too.

Set: Dead Man Theme - The Shivering Sand - One Last Hallelujah - So Cold - The Sandman - I Fly Free - Windward Mark - Pisces Lullabye - Been Around The World - You Let Me Fall - Lucky (Bryn solo) - Distorchestra (Billy, Brian & Keir) - Polarity - Heart On A Platter - Mercy Rule - Lover You Should Have Come Over - The Lightning Rod - Unprofessional - How Far Away - My Second Shipwreck - Fatal Flaws - Wayfaring Stranger

This show felt really good all the way through. We got to play at a campus venue for the first time and went for it full bore, with a webcast linkup courtesy Will Wood and his crew. It was also by far the longest set; we had two hours to work with and so threw in a bunch of new or previously unplayed stuff, like the instrumental jams in the middle of the set or the Neil Young tune at soundcheck. Bryn pulled out another Radiohead cover from his arsenal while the rest of us scattered, then we returned the favor as he scouted the mix from different angles which, according to everyone there, was excellent- great considering our short preparation and the cavernous room. Thanks to everyone who came to see, even if you were only there for a little while (or peering down from the balcony); my show comas make it difficult to properly thank everyone at the time, but we really do appreciate it. Thanks also to the Ucen Admin staff for helping us set up this show- we'd love to do it again.

Bogart's, 1114 State Street, Santa Barbara, with Earl.
Set: Mercy Rule - Lover You Should Have Come Over - Wayfaring Stranger

Bryn and I did an impromtu quickie quiet set as part of the "& Friends" bill of "Earl & Friends". No, this doesn't count as our downtown double-bill- that is still to come in January. We played on borrowed instruments- Bryn on Earl's guitar and me on an upright bass- the first time I'd played one since I was in 4th grade. We didn't do too badly, but since Brian and Billy weren't there, we kept it short.

Our CD release party show got off to a shaky start but was soon running smoothly. Gio's was packed as usual for a Thursday and this audience got a treat when Bryn pulled out one of his many solo Radiohead covers. We actually got to play til 11:30, and the super-extendo set was loudly clamored for by the crowd (you know, we love playing places that serve beer!). As always I recorded the whole shebang, and some of it doesn't sound half bad- a live CD is a definite possibility. Speaking of CDs, we did manage to sell some, so now I guess that makes us officially In It For The Money. Thanks to all who came to cheer us on and thanks also to the Giovanni's staff for accommodating us with the free pizza and beer!

Our first gig on D.P. was entirely too much fun, and everyone said it sounded great and that we did a good job. The fact that there were 3 kegs there might have contributed to this interpretation of events, but it was Del Playa after all. We tried to make the most of the setting, especially considering there was all kinds of competition from other bands on DP that night. I'd hoped to get the crashing surf below us recorded along with everything else, but it was not to be. Notable performances included "Hallelujah", "Shivering Sand", and "Been Around The World" (mp3s up soon!). Big thanks to Nick Louw, who asked us back again. Sure Nick, anytime- but on a warmer night, OK?

Well, we'd never played in a parking lot or office park before, and we didn't know how much of a background noise thing we should be in relation to the rest of the carnival. We sort of played a public rehearsal- I mean hey, there's only so much you can do when you're competing with a guy in a dunk tank. Playing during the day was fun, and a nice change. The high point was Mercy Rule- almost at the end of the show but the apex nonetheless. The low point was just before when the SBHRA folks decided to make an announcement over our Jeff Buckley cover, but we only played louder in return.

Set: Heart On A Platter

Reprising our prescence, thanks to Brandon, at this white elephant condo, we bounded into a great version of "Heart On A Platter" only to be interrupted near the end of the song by the Foot Patrol, who promptly shut us down! It's a Honey White first, to be shut down, and one of the officers was curteous and informative (though the other threatened to confiscate our gear if we started up again later), so we did what they asked. The cop who talked to Bryn about it actually said that we sounded good- so there you have it: we're endorsed by the IVFP. Sucks to get stopped only one song into the set, with so many people there really into it, but ex-CSO Brandon retaliated by bringing out a boombox and blasting our new CD on repeat, and that was that.

Set: Heart On A Platter - Windward Mark - The Shivering Sand - One Last Hallelujah - Mercy Rule - How Far Away - The Sandman - Unprofessional - Fatal Flaws - Pisces Lullabye - You Let Me Fall - The Lightning Rod

We teamed up again with The Hip Crowd and reversed the bill, opening for them as they had for us a month back. The Roland was healthy and happy, and caught a somewhat lackluster set, or so we thought at the time. Listening back to it, "How Far Away", "Fatal Flaws", and "Mercy Rule" didn't turn out so bad. While Billy was stuck on THC's drum riser again, the rest of us stumbled around on a pebbly driveway that served as a stage, while the audience did kegstands and climbed trees.

Wow, where to start? I really felt we were on tour for this one even though it wasn't far from home. To wit: we drove to Oxnard to get a new PA console, spent a lot of money on random stuff, lost time in traffic, got pulled over by the police in Carp, plus I sprained my ankle moving gear, and we still played a pretty good set. Thanks to Brandon for setting this up. The songs went well, especially Fatal Flaws, which received its best Honey White performance. Some drunk guy always replaced our beers, and some other guy ordered a bass solo (hence Lightning Rod's earlier position) and gave me an I'm-not-worthy grovel before he took off. Attendance varied, but we passed the midnight deadline again with Jeff Buckley and Cracker songs, and Emily took a few photos too.

Well, sooner or later you'd have to have a stinker. No no, it wasn't that bad, and 5th out of 5 ain't awful, but the setting, timing, and lack of time to promote left us basically to perform a public rehearsal to a tiny crowd (but really any gig in I.V. is like this). We played a truncated set which was befouled by bad acoustics and a cramped space, which is I suppose what we deserve for not having time to plan how we were gonna go about things. Not that Shaun failed us, though- hell, it wasn't even his house.

Another I.V. band called the Hip Crowd opened for us with a good set. Nice guys, too, and we thank them much for letting us close their show. As it was, we played our best gig yet. After the quiet of Bogart's we were eager to let it rip, and several songs took off for the stratosphere before they slammed back down. I think Lightning Rod might have been the peak of the show. Andy from THC taped both bands with a little Walkman, and the tape is dominated by Bryn and Brian; a great performance and a terrible recording. Ah well. We hit everytthing almost perfectly, even though Billy might not think so (he was up top on a big drum riser)- but despite my show comas/amnesia I remember our best set yet.

Set: Wayfaring Stranger - The Shivering Sand - One Last Hallelujah - The Sandman - I Fly Free - You Let Me Fall - Heart On A Platter - Pisces Lullabye - Lover You Should Have Come Over

Last night’s set at Bogart’s went pretty well (according to us) and very well (according to the audience). Billy elected not to play, as he was afraid It would just be too loud, so the three of us played nine songs, including Sandman's official live debut and a reworked (that very day) Pisces Lullabye, also receiving its Honey White live debut. We went on after sets by both Noelle Price and Earl, and then left the stage for an open-mike session. That turned out to be much better in terms of quality and participation than we initially expected, so we sat back, enjoyed it, and looked forward to a loud, messy show the next night in Isla Vista.

Well, Stir Fry cancelled, but we still went on at around 10pm. Thanks to Shaun, Chris, everyone at 6701 and everyone who showed up- there was a much bigger and more appreciative crowd (50+ people!) than we expected for a holiday weekend covered in fog. Everyone I talked to saw a good show that debuted a few new originals and covers, and unlike me no one cared about our insolent feedback spewing PA system or me singing through a headful of snot (I'd had a cold all week). Bryn broke strings all over the place but drunk girls still wanted to have his children, so go figure. I planed on recording it too, but that didn't really pan out the way I expected.

Set: Unprofessional - One Last Hallelujah - Windward Mark - I Fly Free - Heart On A Platter - Wayfaring Stranger - Fatal Flaws - The Shivering Sand - Lover You Should Have Come Over - How Far Away

For Honey White's debut show Bryn, Brian, Keir, and Billy opened for the mighty Buttcheek Doofus. Our first show went down as a resounding success! Our two bands packed the house, and surrounded by semi- naked photos of Thais Albert (who also made an appearance before us) and Johanna (from BcD), we delivered a quick 10 song set- short sweet and to the point. Next time there will be girls in bikinis. Brian adopted the Clapton/Van Halen "back to the audience" style for a few songs.
